If there isn't a bright star in the field you want to shoot, first move the scope to a bright star, focus, and then move back to your deep-sky object. So turn autofocus off on the lens and use Live View. It doesn't get any more accurate than that. This is coming off the sensor itself, so this is what is going to be recorded in your image. You can try to use autofocus with longer fast lenses, but I like the feedback on actually being able to see the star in focus in Live View. Higher ISOs and longer shutter speeds produce the brightest star images. The brightness of the image for focusing is related to the camera settings. Set the camera to Manual exposure and the Bulb setting for long exposures.Read your manual to learn how to do this. Turn on exposure simulation in Live View if your camera has this option. Some lenses done' have any focus scale on them at all. You can not just rack them all the way to the infinity mark and expect critical focus. Second, note that most modern lenses focus past infinity. How faint of a star that you will be able to focus on will depend on the aperture and focal ratio of the lens, and the camera settings. You're not going to be able to see a nebula or galaxy on Live view, but it definitely can be used for astrophotography by focusing on stars. It's really made for bright scenes encountered in normal daytime photography. There are a several important things you need to know to use Live View for focusing.įirst of all, realize that Live View is not that sensitive. Get close to focus before you use Live View!.Use a bright star or planet to focus on.Use ISO 1600, bulb shutter-speed, and a wide aperture. In my opinion, Live View is the best and easiest way to focus for astrophotography, and believe me, I have tried all of the other methods of focusing. It was shot with a Canon EOS 1000D (Digital Rebel XS) DSLR camera and a Stellarvue SV70ED doublet refractor. This is open cluster M11, the Wild Duck Cluster. Click again to go back to the previous image. Live View's ability to magnify the image to 10x makes it easy to tell when you have achieved correct focus.Ĭlick your mouse cursor in the image to see a comparison between an image that is correctly focused and one that is almost focused. If focus is a little bit off, it can lead to blurriness and larger star sizes, and loss of fainter stars. When you get closer to focus, it is harder to tell if the image is exactly focused. Live View can make the difference between images that are almost in focus and ones that are sharp. You will usually have to manually focus your camera lens or telescope on a star. But autofocus won't work most of the time for astrophotos. To cut costs, most manufacturers skimp on the viewfinder, knowing that almost all photographers are going to be using autofocus. It is very difficult to precisely focus a star field through a DSLR viewfinder by eye alone. Live View can be a tremendous help in focusing an astrophoto if it is used correctly. Since WipEout 2048's release there have been a number of patches that have addressed some of the initial concerns, the most significant of which has taken to the loading times. It's no real surprise, then, that they're fit for the purpose of a handheld, and likewise the honeycomb campaign breaks down the content into perfectly portable chunks. There's some handheld heritage in both HD and Fury, of course, with the bulk of the tracks as well as a fair few of the game modes coming from WipEout's two PSP outings, Pure and Pulse. The port is as immaculate as you could hope for, and it's faithful enough to make the Vita version of WipEout arguably the most comprehensive installment of the series to date. So for anyone left pining for a more traditional WipEout fix on the Vita, this is a perfect solution, with each and every event from the PlayStation 3's HD and Fury moving across to the handheld. Technically it showed what the Vita was capable of, but the heady heights that WipEout's racing is capable of weren't quite prevalent enough. The near-future aesthetic was a welcome rethink, but some of the resultant tracks were left feeling cluttered and cumbersome, while an eager fistful of on-track visual effects only added to the confusion. There are too many tracks added in the new pack to list here, but Sol 2 and Chenghou Project emerge looking more handsome than most. Lost in the noise, though, was some of the purity of purpose that had always marked out WipEout as a racer of class and distinction, the newfound focus on combat making for a game that some - myself included - felt fell some way short of the excellence for which WipEout is renowned. WipEout 2048 was always going to be a technical showcase for Sony's new handheld at the time of its birth, and the prequel of sorts to the long-running futuristic series certainly ticked that box well enough, hurling no small amount of colourful chaos onto that glorious OLED screen. The developer's spell on the Vita is displaying a similar spirit, although admittedly the foundations aren't quite as strong this time round. View a new set of screenshots at the gallery.Studio Liverpool's had a history of generosity, whether that's in how it managed to hand over 1080p 60fps racing at a cut-down price with the original WipEout HD or how it followed up that incredible game with a full-blown sequel in little over six months. WipEout Omega Collection is a feast for both your eyes and ears.

In other words, if you decide to apply this patch, know that you are doing so “at your own risk”. Perhaps it plans to release a future OS X upgrade with 60 Hz support in tow. Maybe Apple wants to sell more MacBook Pros. Perhaps it has to do with heat or some other vital system aspect. The Intel Core M chip, along with the Intel HD Graphics 515 integrated graphics, support 4K resolution at 60 Hz.Īpple may have a valid reason for holding back 4K 60 Hz. DisclaimerĪs to why Apple did not enable 60 Hz resolution out of the box on the 2016 MacBook, I’m still not sure. Watch the step-by-step process in our video tutorial for the details. In fact, I just did so on the LG 27UD88 4K USB-C monitor that I recently reviewed. The good news is that it is possible to enable 60 Hz at native 4K resolution and 1080p (HiDPI/Retina) resolution on a 2016 MacBook. It’s not immediately clear as to why this is, but on its support page, Apple makes it known that 4K resolution is limited to 30 Hz. Sadly, the MacBook only supports 30 Hz out of the box for 4K resolution. Operating at 30 Hz results in jerky and choppy cursor movement, and in some cases can induce headaches after prolonged use. The jump in refresh is a big deal, as anyone who’s tried to put up with running a 30 Hz refresh rate can attest to. One of the great things about the new Intel hardware inside of the 2016 MacBook is that it’s capable of supporting 4K resolution at 60 Hz. Such a feat is achievable via an easy-to-apply IOKit patch. The 2016 MacBook is capable of driving a 4K display at 60 Hz via a single USB-C cable. I’m one of the more patient people when it comes to this game, to a fault. MilkyTracker was GPLed in 2008, and it seeks to emulate one of popular original trackers, FastTracker. The one I chose to use, of the three that are familiar to me (Milky, Schism, and Sound), is MilkyTracker. (Arguably earlier, depending on how you view some of the earlier hardware interfaces on some drum machines and sample sequencers.) For now, suffice it to say that the concept of trackers has been around since at least the early '90s. In other words, instead of trying to use lightweight versions of modern music software, the ultimate answer turns out to be a grand old tradition of electronic music: the tracker.Ī proper history of trackers is out of scope for this article, so if you're interested, look up information on the original trackers like FastTracker and ProTracker. In fact, music used to be (and still is, in some circles) made on rack units that used floppy disk drives and MIDI cables. Music wasn't always made on fast multi-core computers with gigabytes of RAM. It was fun to noodle around with, but it definitely wasn't something I'd take on the road (and by "road", I mean "studio") to perform or to an event to teach people about computer music. Once I got serious about making music on it, rather than just making loops for fun, I found that it ran very slow even with just a simple sequence, and a lot worse when I added more synths into the mix. No JACK required, and a fairly lightweight solution.Īfter an afternoon of trying out my simple Pi audio workstation, I found that it only worked as a proof-of-concept. I sent signals from Seq24 to ALSA's inbuilt MIDI-In to trigger AMSynth. I eventually settled on the modular Seq24 MIDI sequencer to provide a "piano roll" editing interface for composition, along with AMsynth as the synth to provide sounds. Because many Linux sound applications expect JACK, my options were more limited than what I am used to on my Slackware workstation. I found straight away that JACK on a Pi was not practical. Lightweight ALSA appsĪt first, I looked at a few of the usual suspects for low-spec sound work I loaded up a few modular components and tested them out. Linux offers a lot of both, so the first order of business is to look at the options out there, and try them out on the Pi. Sequencer: a program that keeps track of what sound will play and when.So what do we need to make music on the Pi? Electronic music traditionally consists of two components: If you're not familiar with that style of interface, then go with LXDE (which is usually the default desktop on Pi distributions). If you're familiar with Fluxbox or Ratpoison, those may be the non-desktops to go with when making music. Regardless of which Pi model you use, you'll want to keep the overhead for the rest of the system as low as possible. I'll mention significant differences in performance when applicable. As it turns out, I didn't end up needing a mouse, so in the end I did do a little testing on the A+. When I set out to make my Pi into a digital audio studio, I thought I would need one USB port for a mouse and one for a keyboard. I do have access to a model A+ (256MB RAM), but it only has one USB port. I wanted to aim as low as possible, so I did all my work on a Raspberry Pi v1 model B. Turns out, it can be quite an amazing little sequencer, as long as you know what tools to use and aren't afraid to learn a little something new. I even have a few precious drops left of Compass Box’s sublime Three Year Old Deluxe from a few years ago – John Glaser’s attempt to capture the spirit of Brora.įast forward to late 2021, and my peepers were drawn to reports of a new bottle to be added to the Compass Box core range. What a wonderful whisky that was and a brilliant celebration of Glen Elgin – a distillery that’s somehow, inexplicably, still flying under the radar, although I expect not for much longer. To prove it, I’ll point immediately to Compass Box’s Myths & Legends series as being top-drawer drams – especially Myths & Legends II. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with the whiskies above, just a wish that more could be done with the core offerings and something that would be a little easier on Clyde’s dusty old wallet. Let’s not talk about the auction prices some of these bottles go for now. I was left disappointed and eager for a new experience – something quality but well-priced, but we seemed instead to be deluged by a never-ending stream of bottles like Menagerie, Rogue’s Banquet, Canvas, The Circle (no, not Sammy Hagar’s band) and the highly coveted Tobias And The Angel, which hit retail at some pretty high prices it has to be said. It lacked much-needed oomph in the ABV department and sherry/wine cask maturation will never be my go-to style of whisky. I guess this first struck a chord with me after I tried The Story Of The Spaniard a few years ago. Sure, stalwarts like Peat Monster, Spice Tree and Hedonism are great products for the price, but for me, Compass Box seemed to be focusing more on their limited releases rather than introduce something new and vibrant to the range that helped elevate them into the top tier of blenders in the first place. For more information, visit the Compass Box website. The Orchard House Is The Fruit-forward Offering I’ve Been Waiting ForĪfter drinking and thoroughly enjoying Compass Box’s output over the course of the last decade or so, I was beginning to lose a little faith in them when it came to a bit more fresh variety in their core range. 9,126 bottles will be made available worldwide, at an SRP of $125. As we celebrate the origin story of The Peat Monster with this Cask Strength Limited Edition, it’s also worth noting and celebrating how the American palate has evolved over this period and come to embrace the traditional peaty and smoky flavours of Scotch whiskies like The Peat Monster.” Bottled at 56.7% ABV, the producers have described the expression as having notes of tarry, smoked almond, vanilla and seaweed on the palate. Speaking on the release, Glaser commented: “It's always been our mission at Compass Box to create compelling whiskies, even if it means breaking moulds – or creating new ones! Thanks to the early collaboration with Jonathan, we created a quintessential peated whisky that has gone on to become one of our core expressions, still beloved by whisky drinkers two decades later. The exclusive US-only label includes addiotional New York City elements, including a yellow cab and an copy of one of the city’s best known newspapers. The Peat Monster widely released to the US market in 2004 and became one of Compass Box’s most beloved expressions, a favourite for anyone with a passion for smoky flavours. The Peat Monster was first created by the combined forces of Jonathan Goldstein of Park Avenue Liquors and John Glaser, founder of Compass Box, for an exclusive release back in 2003. Compass Box has announced the release of The Peat Monster Cask Strength: Origin Story, a limited edition blended malt that celebrates the origin story of The Peat Monster.
